Most of us had no prior building experience, and I was not sure if we would really be helpful, or if they were just going to appease us by letting us think we did something and then take it all apart and start over when we left. I was surprised to find that event was well organized and each of us had something constructive to do. There is a strong sense of community when you work side by side with people you know and trust, enjoying a bit of playful banter while working up a sweat. The joy is knowing that what you are doing will not only make a difference in the lives of those who will receive the gift of shelter, but also to those who experienced with you the gift of giving of time and self for the sake of helping others. That sense of community will stay with us and inspire us in years to come. They provide the peace of having shelter and a safe place to raise a family to those that could not otherwise afford it.
