the adhan

In Islam, there is a song which sung five times a day to call those of Mulsim faith to prayer. This song is called the Adhan
(or Azaan) and is sung by a servant of Allah called the Muezzin. In the early days of Islam, the Muezzin would climb the stairs of the Minaret in the Mosque to personally sing the Adhan. Today, the Adhan is usually pre-recorded.
Although I myself am not a Muslim, when I sit and listen to the Adhan I feel a very strong sense of peace. For me, only because I don’t understand the words in its entirety, I think it affects me so because I feel the love and devotion of the one who sings. This is not just a whimsical song for the Muezzin, this is his passion.
There are several versions of the Adhan you can download for free at a site called Haqaonline. My favorite is the one sung by Yusuf Islam formerly known as Cat Stevens.
