I look at the stars up in the sky Miro las estrellas en el cielo
The same stars that shine on the other side Las mismas estrellas que brillan en el otro lado
My life is surrounded with harmony Mi vida está rodeada de armonía
A plethora of food in my pantry Una plétora de alimentos en mi despensa
Warm shelter for sleep Cálido refugio para dormir
I look again at the stars in the sky Estoy deseando volver a las estrellas en el cielo
Indeed the same stars De hecho, la misma estrellas
The heavens won’t lie Los cielos no se encuentran
My children have dreams Mis hijos tienen sueños

This was the first of three poems I submitted to “Poets Against War”. Este fue el primero de los tres poemas que presenté a "Poetas contra la Guerra".
Before the first Desert Storm I had the opportunity to visit my husbands family in Baghdad. Antes de la primera Tormenta del Desierto tuve la oportunidad de visitar a mi marido familia en Bagdad. I was young and so full of hope to be able to be a part of and start a relationship with his beautiful and loving family. Yo era joven y tan lleno de esperanza para poder ser parte de y empezar una relación con su bella y amorosa familia. I remember one night sitting outside in their garden and I plopped one of my nieces on my lap and pointed up to the stars. Recuerdo una noche en sesión fuera de su jardín y yo plopped una de mis sobrinas en mi regazo y se refirió a las estrellas.
“We have the same stars in America” I said. "Tenemos las mismas estrellas en Estados Unidos" he dicho. “That means I am not really that far away from you because we share the same sky”. "Eso significa que no estoy realmente que lejos de usted porque compartimos el mismo cielo".
The following summer the bombs started falling in Baghdad. El verano siguiente se inició la caída de bombas en Bagdad. I felt as though I deceived this precious little girl, because I did not feel that close at all. Me sentí como si me engaña esta preciosa niña, porque yo no siento que cerca a todos. I was worlds away. Yo estaba mundos de distancia. I would look at the stars and wonder how this could be happening. Me gustaría ver a las estrellas y se preguntan cómo esto podría estar ocurriendo.
Indigo, what an achingly beautiful piece of prose … your words really touched a cord deep within me and I am sitting here with tears in my eyes and so sad for all the innocent people who are caught up in this hell. Indigo, lo achingly una hermosa pieza de prosa… sus palabras realmente tocado una cuerda profunda dentro de mí y yo estoy sentado aquí con lágrimas en los ojos y tan triste para todas las personas inocentes que se ven atrapados en este infierno. We all thought it would be over within a few months …. Todos pensaban que sería más dentro de unos meses…. but many years later, the madness continues without any end in sight. pero muchos años más tarde, la locura sigue sin final a la vista. Thank you for your kind comments. Gracias por sus amables comentarios. I have yet to make it back to Iraq, a place that once the world barely knew existed. Aún no he de hacer volver a Iraq, un lugar que una vez que el mundo apenas sabía existía. I hope to return one day, to see a new generation with hopes of peace and stars that shine as brightly as ours. Espero regresar un día, para ver una nueva generación con la esperanza de paz y las estrellas que brillan como brillantes como la nuestra.
Thats beautiful Deborah…love the poem… i do astronomy, and when I look into the night, I’m awed that we share the one sky, I’m also aware how fragile our planet, and ourselves are…No you didnt decieve your neice, you spoke the truth from the heart, and non of us could be aware of the nightmare to come….be gentle on yourself Que hermosa Deborah amor… el poema… i hacer astronomía, y cuando miro en la noche, estoy awed que compartimos el cielo, soy también consciente de cuán frágil es nuestro planeta y nosotros mismos… No se le didnt su decieve sobrina, usted ha hablado la verdad desde el corazón, y no de nosotros podría ser conscientes de la pesadilla por venir…. gentil ser en ti mismo
Thank you Abby, I am also awed that we share the same sky as generations before us and amazed at how they found answers in the placement of the stars. Gracias Abby, también me awed que compartimos el mismo cielo como las generaciones que tenemos ante nosotros y sorprendido por la forma en que encontró respuesta en la colocación de las estrellas. I pray that the generations to come see stars that elude to peace. Rezo para que las generaciones venideras ver estrellas que escapan a la paz.
