I look at the stars up in the sky Guardo le stelle nel cielo
The same stars that shine on the other side Lo stesso stelle che brillano sul lato
My life is surrounded with harmony La mia vita è circondata con armonia
A plethora of food in my pantry Una molteplicità di prodotti alimentari nella mia dispensa
Warm shelter for sleep Caldo rifugio per dormire
I look again at the stars in the sky Attendo ancora una volta le stelle nel cielo
Indeed the same stars Infatti la stessa stelle
The heavens won’t lie I cieli non mentire
My children have dreams I miei figli hanno sogni
More than the ocean blue Oltre l'oceano blu
Opportunities abundant Opportunità abbondanti
To make them come true Per renderli avverarsi
I look again at the stars in the sky Attendo ancora una volta le stelle nel cielo

This was the first of three poems I submitted to “Poets Against War”. Questo è stato il primo di tre poesie ho presentato a "Poeti contro la guerra".
Before the first Desert Storm I had the opportunity to visit my husbands family in Baghdad. Prima del primo Desert Storm ho avuto l'opportunità di visitare la mia famiglia mariti a Baghdad. I was young and so full of hope to be able to be a part of and start a relationship with his beautiful and loving family. Ero giovane e così pieno di speranza per essere in grado di essere una parte e di avviare un rapporto con la sua bella e amorevole famiglia. I remember one night sitting outside in their garden and I plopped one of my nieces on my lap and pointed up to the stars. Mi ricordo di una notte di seduta al di fuori nel loro giardino e mi plopped uno dei miei nieces per il mio giro e fino a osservare le stelle.
“We have the same stars in America” I said. "Abbiamo le stesse stelle in America" ho detto. “That means I am not really that far away from you because we share the same sky”. "Questo significa che io non sono veramente che lontano da voi perché condividiamo lo stesso cielo".
The following summer the bombs started falling in Baghdad. Le seguenti estate le bombe che rientrano iniziato a Baghdad. I felt as though I deceived this precious little girl, because I did not feel that close at all. Mi sentivo come se ho ingannato questo prezioso bambina, perché non ho la sensazione che vicino a tutti. I was worlds away. Mi è stato mondi lontani. I would look at the stars and wonder how this could be happening. Vorrei guardare le stelle e chiedo come ciò potrebbe accadere.
Indigo, what an achingly beautiful piece of prose … your words really touched a cord deep within me and I am sitting here with tears in my eyes and so sad for all the innocent people who are caught up in this hell. Indigo, ciò che uno achingly pezzo di bella prosa… le sue parole veramente toccato una corda profonda in me e io sono seduto qui con le lacrime agli occhi e così triste per tutte le persone innocenti che sono coinvolti in questo inferno. We all thought it would be over within a few months …. Siamo tutti pensato che sarebbe stato più nel giro di pochi mesi…. but many years later, the madness continues without any end in sight. ma molti anni dopo, la follia continua senza fine in vista. Thank you for your kind comments. Ringrazio per le gentili commenti. I have yet to make it back to Iraq, a place that once the world barely knew existed. Devo ancora rendere ritornare in Iraq, un luogo che, una volta che il mondo sapeva a malapena esisteva. I hope to return one day, to see a new generation with hopes of peace and stars that shine as brightly as ours. Spero di tornare un giorno, per vedere una nuova generazione con le speranze di pace e di stelle che brillano come vivaci come il nostro.
Thats beautiful Deborah…love the poem… i do astronomy, and when I look into the night, I’m awed that we share the one sky, I’m also aware how fragile our planet, and ourselves are…No you didnt decieve your neice, you spoke the truth from the heart, and non of us could be aware of the nightmare to come….be gentle on yourself Thats bella Deborah… amare la poesia… fare astronomia, e quando guardo nella notte, sono awed che condividiamo un cielo, sono anche consapevole fragile come il nostro pianeta, e noi stessi… sono n. voi il vostro didnt decieve nipote, lei ha parlato la verità dal cuore, e non di noi potrebbe essere consapevoli dei incubo a venire…. essere dolce a te
Thank you Abby, I am also awed that we share the same sky as generations before us and amazed at how they found answers in the placement of the stars. La ringrazio Abby, sono anche awed che condividiamo lo stesso cielo come generazioni prima di noi e stupiti di come hanno trovato risposte nel posizionamento delle stelle.
