a love story

This is a very touching story about a soldier on his second tour in Iraq, who befriended and nursed an abused dog back to health. He named the dog Nubs because the poor thing had his ears cut off, apparently on purpose to make him more alert. After only a few months from taking the dog in, the soldier and his unit were relocated and they had to leave Nubs behind.
Two days later, Nubs comes wandering into the soldiers camp which was at least 70 miles from where the soldier had left him. The dog had found peace in this kind soldier and he wasn’t about to give it up. The 70 mile treck across the desert could not have been an easy one, with harsh conditions and the temperatures reaching only 18 degrees.
Strict rules did not allow the soldier to keep the dog, and if he did not find a place for him the dog would have to be shot. The soldier started an e-mail campaign and raised enough money to transfer the dog to a family in Jordan for safe keeping until he could be reunited with him when his tour was over.
What an wonderful story to come out of the midst of war! How a little taste of peace could make this brave little dog take the challenge and go the distance in order to once again feel the warmth and comfort of peace.

Now that is a Valentine’s story I like
A wonderful and heartwarming story.
It made me cry.
That made me cry buckets too … I despise any form of cruelty to animals and to read that poor Nubs found comfort with that poor soldier was just such a moving tale. I’m now worried that they may not end up together after the soldier goes home … wonder if there is any way we can keep up with the story ? Another feel-good story to come out of an otherwise hellish place - thanks Indigo Daisy for telling this tale…
Does shambala mean anything more specific than just “place of peace”~?
Just wondering because I’ve come across the expression so very many times!
Lovely blog you got here btw… take care and have a great weekend
;->…
Missus T, I will have to set up a search for it in my diffbot. (diffbot.com) to see if I can somehow follow up on anything new. I too would like to ensure a happy ending.
Gledwood,
Shambala is a Sanskrit term meaning place of peace, tranquility and happiness. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition is known as a mythical kingdom hidden somewhere in the Himalayas. I got it from the 3 Dog Night Song Shambala
Thanks for the info! I will follow your site for continueing info.I’m really anxiously waiting to learn that nubs is finally in san diego!
Welcome Carole! This was such a wonderful story and so nice to finally hear good news coming out of Iraq. I will make sure and update my blog when something new comes up in my diffbot search page.
Hello fellow dog lovers, my name is Heather and I am part of the Bring NUBS to America clan. NUBS is in great hands now, Brian has made sure of that. There is a certified trainer set up to help NUBS transition to his King of the Beach status and a backbone of amazing NUBS and Brain supporters that are going to make sure NUBS is taken care of until the two can be reunited. I am sure you will see follow up once the two are together again as the media is hounding for follow up stories.
I did want to let everyone know as I am combing the net that Brian is NOT raising anymore money for NUBS so please do not listen to anyone who says they are collecting for the cause. They are scammers and in my mind are bad people trying to take advantage of a nice story. Brian really appreciates all the offers but he has told us all that NUBS is his dog and his responsibility and will take care of the rest of the financial needs for NUBS. I can not put words in Brian’s mouth but if you still feel the need to donate I am sure your local Humane Society or Animal Prevention Organization would appreciate any donations made in honor of NUBS. Otherwise your good thoughts sent to the two soul mates is enough I am sure.
I must say when I first read this story it bought a smile to my lips…what a heroic dog Nubs is…
Here is another story from military.com that offers a few more details about Nubs. http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,162322,00.html?wh=news
It appears there has been so much interest in this story that there is sure to be a follow up of the reunion in late March when Major Dennis is due to return to the States. In the meantime, I will keep watching my page on diffbot.com and do a follow up post when something new pops up.
