Wellness Wednesday - Valerian Root
Jul 15th, 2008 by indigo-daisy
In a quest to find an alternative to sleeping pills I came across the herb Valerian Root. It is not the most pleasant smelling remedy, but if you’re in need of a good nights sleep, this may do the trick.
It comes in tablet form, however I prefer the capsules filled with the ground and powdered root as it just seems more natural to me. Celestial Seasonings also includes the root it in their "Sleepy Time Tea Extra".
Whenever traveling away from home there is in my bag both "Sleepy Time Tea Extra and Valerian Root Capsules. The light Chamomile tea is just the thing to help one unwind from all the anxieties that go along with trekking through airports and being away from the comforts of your own home and your own bed. The capsules can even be taken just a few hours before you need to wake up as they never leave you feeling groggy. I always wake up felling very well rested and ready to go no matter how late at night I take them.
This was a wonderful find for me, a way to get a restful nights sleep without resorting to an addictive sleeping pill.

I haven’t tried this, but I probably should. I’ve had sleep problems as long as I can remember.
very interesting!
…what does it smell like?
It is hard to describe the smell, the only thing that comes to mind is compost….I just hold my nose and swallow. If you can’t get past the smell, the tea works just as well and it has a nice sweet pleasant smell and taste. The “Extra” in the “Sleepy Time Tea Extra” by Celestial Seasonings is the Valerian Root.
I must remember this - I do use the Sleepy Time Tea from time to time but didn’t appreciate the importance of the valerian root. I learn something every time I come by here
It is the Sleepy Time Tea “Extra” that has he Valerian root. I brew it for my family a lot in the winter.
Hi Indigo
been trying to leave a comment all week. I use Valerian but i havnt bought it for ages. Must remember to get some for the medicine chest. Although I dont find it knocks me out, it takes the edge off my awakefulness and you dont wake groggy… ta for reminding me…x
Hi Abz,
Thats what I love about it, it takes the edge off and doesn’t leave you groggy. I hate driving to work in the morning barely able to keep my eyes open, is such a safety hazard.
